Research basis

The Swiss National Park has been a research area since its foundation in 1914. Research in this «open air laboratory» has been one of the core objectives of the founding fathers and research is firmly positioned in the law governing the Park in addition to conservation and public relations. Research is carried out both by  the Park staff and  by external scientists. Every year up to 100 researchers from Switzerland and abroad carry out scientific studies in the National Park.

Researchers are only allowed to leave the marked trails within the area for which they have been given permission, and are recognised by their fluorescent orange jackets.

Research topics

The fields of research in and around the National Park are broad and increasingly interlinked. They range from the monitoring of flora and fauna to studies on the number, composition and motivation of visitors. The effects of climate change and the protection of natural processes on the landscape and biodiversity are being researched, as well as the contribution of the protected area to the regional development and economy.

Your research project in the Park

Would you like to carry out a research project yourself?
Before starting a project in the Swiss National Park (SNP) and its surroundings, all researchers are requested to submit an application to the Research Commission of the Park. You can find all the information you need via the link below. The Research Commission looks forward to receiving your project application!

Are you interested in becoming part of the National Park team for a limited period of time?
We offer the opportunity to do internships. Master’s theses or other student research projects are also possible. Further information will be given in German.

Geoinformation and monitoring

The aim of our monitoring is to document a wide range of processes in the Swiss National Park over long periods of time. Geoinformation supports the monitoring and all other divisions of the Swiss National Park with spatial data, spatial analyses and the provision of maps.

Many research topics in the National Park are about WHERE and WHEN something takes place. Location and timing are decisive factors in understanding developments in the Park. By monitoring these developments, we can answer questions such as:

  • Where, when and why do the deer graze in Val Trupchun in summer?
  • Where did the debris flow on Buffalora deposit how much material?
  • Where will the new hiking trail be created if the safety of the existing trail is no longer guaranteed?
