The lynx was no luckier than the wolf and the bear.
During the 19th century the lynx was exterminated in Switzerland. Strictly carnivorous, the lynx was previously considered by man to be a competitor. They mainly eat chamois and roe deer, creeping up on them and killing them with a well-aimed bite in the neck. A lynx eats about 1.5 kg of meat a day.
Sightings in the National Park:
- In 2007 a lynx migrated from north-eastern Switzerland into the National Park. It remained in the region for several months, during which time it was fitted with a tracker collar. It has subsequently migrated to the Trentino region in Italy.
- April 2020: After the discovery of footprints in the National Park by wardens, gamekeepers from Canton Graubünden agency for hunting and fishing were able to document the lynx outside the Park with camera traps.
- July 2023: First confirmed lynx reproduction in the Engadine. On July 22nd 2023 a hunter was able to supply the first evidence of lynx reproduction in the Engadine in the area of Zernez.
